BRADES, Montserrat, October 19th, 2011 – The Department of Environment as part of its outreach programme has published a brochure to raise awareness of climate change and the possible impact it could have on Montserrat.

“Climate change will have its greatest effect on small islands such as Montserrat which have fragile and vulnerable environments and limited resources,” says Director Gerald Gray. “These islands have contributed the least to climate change.

However, the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts and floods;   and increased incidence of vector borne diseases, may have negative impacts on the islands’ productivity. Climate change is likely to affect the major socio-economic areas such as tourism, health, agriculture, finance and infrastructure.”

“The brochure provides useful information and gives a brief description of what climate change is and what we can expect in terms of changes in temperature, humidity, rainfall and sea level rise.

It goes on to give information on what one can do to adapt to climate change and suggests ways one can save money by utilizing energy saving and water harvesting technologies,” a statement from the department read.

The brochure was officially launched on 14 October and is available at the Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters, the Public Library, Montserrat Tourist Board, the Governor’s Office and the Montserrat National Trust.
