ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,October 19th, 2011 – The second phase of Social Development Department’s annual Back-to-School Uniform and Supplies Drive, which was aimed at distributing the balance of items from the first phase of the drive, ended on October 5, 2011.

After the Department solicited donations within the community a few weeks before the start of the current school year, various individuals, churches, organisations and businesses responded by providing articles such as school bags, copy and text books, uniforms and stationery.

Supervisor of the Family and Children’s Services Division, Mrs. Stacie Stoutt-James stated that, “There were a number of items remaining after parents came to the Department to collect back-to-school items for their children, so we decided to go to as many of the primary schools on the island as we could to distribute these items.”

The schools sent positive feedback to officers at the Department, and principals stated that children who are in most need would benefit from donated items. Principal of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, Sybil Hodge said, “These items that are needed on a daily basis for students use and for the parents who are not financially able to provide for their children’s needs. We appreciate the department.”

She added, “Ebenezer Thomas Primary School is most grateful to the Department of Social Development.” Mrs. Stoutt-James expressed that “For the second year the Social Development Department has been able to provide age-appropriate school supplies and uniforms to more than 60 families in the Territory.”

Social Development Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development aims to provide the population of the Virgin Islands with effective social services that will empower, promote and enrich their quality of life, while fostering individual independence.
