BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THREE martial artistes recently returned to the Federation after being successful in the Caribbean Amateur Fighting Championships (CAFC) held in Trinidad.
The three members of the Apocalypse Mixed Martial Arts (AMMA) Club, Alex Lewis, Livine Stevens and Tija Stanley and are Light weight, Light-heavy weight and Heavy weight respectively, won their individual competitions that were held at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena.
The tournament was held from Oct. 14-16 at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena and during an interview with Stevens, he told SKNVibes that each match featured five, 5-minute rounds and all their matches ended in the first round.
He said that Lewis’ match ended in a knockout, Stanley’s match ended in a guillotine submission while his match ended in an arm-bar submission.
This was the second time they were invited to the tournament which is organized by Davanand Samaroo of the Caribbean Kickboxing Grappling Sanshou Federation (CKGSF) in Trinidad.
Stevens said that they received great support from Trinidadians while at the championships including from Roger Mohammed.
In three months time the guys will have to travel to Trinidad once again to defend their titles.
“As title holders, there is always someone coming after your title and so we have to defend our titles in 90 days,” he said.
“We’re hoping that eventually we’ll be able to have other fighters for the other categories traveling with us, as we need someone for the Banton and Featherweight category and there is also a female division as well.”
Livine said they wanted to extend their gratitude to the persons that supported their efforts and also to Minister with responsibility for Sports, Glen Phillip.
AMMA was started in 2004 and has members that have over 20 years expereince.
Livine said that the mixed martial arts discipline consists of different fighting styles including Boxing, Judo, Submission Wrestling/Grappling, Aikido, Jujitsu and Muay Thai/Kickboxing.
He said it is their hope that the sport can one day have its own school as the artform is also great for discipline, exercise and more importantly self-defense.
