Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat, October 19th, 2011 – Will the Montserrat Secondary School (MSS) need to be relocated to make way for expansion in years to come? What areas will need to be rezoned to allow for economic development? What are the options for developing a new town in Little Bay? Proposals for answering these questions are dealt with in the draft Physical Development Plan 2012 – 2022, which will be released to the public next Monday, October 24.

Senior civil servants were given a brief presentation on Tuesday from representatives of the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) and the team from IMC Worldwide who have been managing the development of the plan.

Franklyn Greenaway, head of the PPU says some of the issues which must be considered include: a relook at the restrictive covenants in areas where further development can add economic value to the island; the changing demographics of Montserrat’s population and the alien land-holding license fees.

Andreas Beavor and James Whittle of IMC Worldwide shared additional details of issues raised in the draft document.

The PDP presents proposals on moving the secondary school, which is situated in an area with no room for expansion, and the future education needs of the island given the Government’s push for a population of between 9000 and 10,000 by 2022.

Whittle told civil servants that the contentious issue of sand mining in the Belham Valley, possible effects on the environment, the social implications and the potential economic impact are also discussed.

The two proposals presented at the recently concluded charrette on Little Bay have also been included so that persons can see the options and make suggestions.

The general public is asked to actively participate in the upcoming consultation, starting on Monday October 24 at 9am at the Brades Arts & Education Centre.

Persons will also be able to view the PDP online at www.ppu.gov.ms and send their suggestions to comments@ppu.gov.ms.
