Press Release

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, October 20th, 2011 -- The Horsford’s Group of Companies has reiterated  its support for the development of Calypso, Culture and Carnival with a pledge of over $20,000 in cash and kind to various cultural groups.

The commitment was formalized recently when two organizations were presented with sponsorship cheques. The Legends Calypso Tent, under the leadership of local calypso icon, Sylvester “King Socrates” Hodge, was established in 2002 and has grown into the Premier Calypso tent in St. Kitts-Nevis.

Boasting some of the islands’ top proponents of the art form including former National Calypso Kings, Socrates and Phonsie, as well as popular performers Neglector, Hot Rod (Turkey Killer) and Anastasia, the tent has been extremely successful over the last few years.

In a brief handing over ceremony at ZIZ studios on Tuesday October 18th  Mr. Wallis Wilkin of the Horsford’s Group, presented Hodge with a cheque which represented the company’s financial commitment to the entertainment group. Mr. Wilkin  indicated that his company’s contribution will be further enhanced through the provision of various services to the tent.

During the same ceremony Mr. Keeshawn “Banka”  Walwyn owner and costume builder  of Banka Mas Camp was also presented with a  sponsorship cheque. This year the 6 year old Mas Camp is this year  presenting “Somewhere in Taiwan” a tribute to the celebration of the centennial celebration for the Republic of China (R.O.C) also known as Taiwan.

“Horsford’s has been a huge supporter of the development of youth, culture, calypso and carnival over the years with the commitment of hundreds of thousands of dollars to various carnival, calypso and cultural events over the last 40 years and more,” said Wallis Wilkin of the Horsford’s Group.

“This commitment falls in line with our company’s traditional eagerness to support various community efforts. So we are certainly pleased to make this significant contribution to this years carnival celebrations.” Wilkin continued.

Over the years S.L Horsford & Company Ltd. has been the major sponsor of many carnival events  and cultural groups including the Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant, Sylvester’s Masquerade, the National Carnival Queen Show, the Miss Culturama Swimsuit competition, various carnival and jouvert troupes as well as many village festivals including Festivale De Capisterre and Green Valley Fest.
