BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Nagico Insurance Company made two donations yesterday Wednesday, Oct. 19 at ZIZ Studios to the St. Kitts and Nevis Diabetes Association and the Nevis Renal Society.
For the first time the Nagico Leewards Islands 50 overs Tournament was held in St. Kitts and Nevis from September 25 to October 9 and the competition was won by Antigua and Barbuda for the eighth time.
The competition has been around for nine years.
According to Vernon Springer, Events and Media manager for the Tournament, “A proposal was put forward to the Nagico Insurance Company, where anyone who hits a six during the final four matches, whether it be St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Maarten or Antigua, that EC$100 will go to two organizations.
“Today the beneficiaries are St. Kitts-Nevis Diabetes Association and the Nevis Renal Society, complimented cricketers who played in the tournament,” Springer said.
A cheque of EC$1,700 was each handed to the organizations by Nagico representatives Amit Mohabir and Mashanda Woodley.
The first cheque was handed over to the Diabetes Association and accepted by the President Merle Liburd, Treasurer Eulynis Browne and member Ray John.
“We’re going through a metamorphosis with the Association… we’re actually looking at programmes and activities for our diabetes patients in St. Kitts and Nevis and we have been providing strips and been doing little things but not enough, so this year we have a big week of activities coming up, from Sunday Nov. 13 to Nov. 19,” John said.
He said the monetary contribution will go toward raising the number of strips they can disburse; adding that strips are very expensive and that they have to import them.
John mentioned that the Association has been networking with other organizations. This involved their participating in the month of the elderly, and giving some emergency help to a target group in Cayon. The Diabetes Association will be an integral part of that.”
“Community activity; we want to raise the level of awareness of diabetes in the island. A lot of people don’t understand diabetes, we want to encourage others to join the association, where people can come and share challenges they experience, so we can share with others. cThank you a great deal,” he said.
Elmeader Brookes of the Nevis Renal Society expressed her sincere gratitude to Nagico and after accepting their donation said that more and more persons are becoming afflicted with renal disease
“We have been providing support, for patients suffering from kidney disease and our long term goal is to establish a Dialysis Unit on Nevis,” she said. “It’s gifts like these that are timely and important and help us achieve our goal.”
