Marcella Liburd (L) and Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis Hon. Dr Denzil Douglas
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – “I would love Marcella Liburd to run in number two…” was the answer given by Prime Minister Hon. Denzil Douglas when asked about the possibility of Attorney at Law Marcella Liburd contesting the next general elections in St. Kitts. He added however that this support would come only “if she has passed through the various stages of selection by my party”.

Dr. Douglas acknowledged that Liburd had been identified for candidacy but declined to give confirmation saying he was not “in a position to confirm or deny at this time whether she will be a candidate”.

“I think that is going to be left up to Marcella at the appropriate time, not only to make the decision but also make that announcement. I will assist in any way with her decision-making and of course the announcement, if it comes to that.”

Many claims of possible new candidates for both the Labour Party and the People’s Action Movement (PAM) have been making the rounds on the rumor circuits, including one claim that the Prime Minister may contest the seat in Constituency #4, forgoing his usual landslide victories in Constituency #6 to go head to head with PAM’s leader Lindsay Grant.

The nation’s leader answered that election-related question at his last media briefing late February, saying that he had told his party to ‘let him go to number 4’.    ~~Adz:Right~~

“I keep telling my party to let me deal with number four and put that question to rest of who is the better person; who is then the better person to lead this country. Let us go to the test in number four! They tell me Mr. Prime Minister you crazy...take it easy…we have somebody to beat the man in number four so don’t worry about that,” the Honorable Prime Minister answered.

When asked to name said person, Dr. Douglas laughed and said “Let me tell you something, if it is one thing I don’t do, is talk before my time, and at the right time we shall all know and we shall all hear and we shall all see.”

Political watchdogs are drawing on the recent announcement that Liburd ‘intends to demit the office of Speaker of the National Assembly in the near future, before the end of the life of this current Parliament’ as proof of her intention to vie for a seat in Government.

This perceived ‘proof’ appears to be strengthened by the Prime Minister’s statement that he had “mixed feelings because in demitting office it provides you [Liburd] the opportunity to serve your people and your country in a different but equally important capacity hopefully in a high office in the future”.
