ST. JOHN'S Antigua, October 20th, 2011 -- Two Antiguan and Barbudan students have commenced studies in the Republic of Serbia under the World in Serbia Scholarship programme in conjunction with the Prime Minister Scholarship Committee.

Clarissa Williams and Kayla Samuel joined other students from CARICOM and Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Member States, who will be given a year-long emersion course in Serbian language and culture before commencing studies in Psychology and Special Education.

Prime Minister the Hon. W. Baldwin Spencer who held discussions on the scholarship programme with the Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic during a visit to the Caribbean earlier this year, said that he is delighted that Antiguan and Barbudan students are being given the opportunity to pursue studies in Serbia which will create a meaningful bond between that country and Antigua and Barbuda and ultimately the Caribbean.

“This partnership between the Republic of Serbia and Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean can only lead to stronger ties which will be beneficial to both regions.  I am pleased that the Government of the Republic of Serbia has agreed to partner with Antigua and Barbuda in our quest to provide the best education for our people.  We appreciate this partnership greatly,” said PM Spencer.

During the discussions Foreign Minister Jeremic said that it is expected that the “World in Serbia Scholars” will return to Antigua and Barbuda and the region with world-class skills, ready to accept the responsibility of leadership in their chosen field, and able to build the connections that will solidify relations between Serbia and the Caribbean Community in the decades to come.

Clarissa Williams and Kayla Samuel will pursue their undergraduate studies at the University of Belgrade.
