Press Release

    ST. JOHN'S Antigua, October 20th, 2011 -- Asha Christian-Philip, Special Projects Coordinator within the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science and Technology is currently attending an African Caribbean and Pacific Group (ACP) - Europe ICT Roundtable in Brussels, Belgium from 20th-21st October 2011.

    The (ACP) Secretariat and the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) are hosting the roundtable under the theme: Broadband for Delivering e-Society.

    The event will draw together global experts from International Organizations such as the ITU, the European public sector and the private sector.

    Broadband helps deliver a range of critically important services such as e-Commerce, e-Health, e-Education, and e-Governance. In fact, according to the World Bank, for every 10 percent increase in broadband penetration, low middle income countries’ economic growth accelerates by 1.38 percent.

    With Broadband penetration in 2009 estimated to be 1.9 percent in sub-saharan Africa, 7.46 percent in the Caribbean and 1.6 percent in Pacific (excluding Australia and New Zealand), it is apparent that a more concerted effort is needed to catalyse Broadband rollout in ACP countries. In order to assist ACP countries in this endeavor, the ACP secretariat and the CTO have decided to jointly organize this event.

    Amongst other things it will;

    ¦Help create enabling policy and regulatory environments for broadband rollout in ACP countries;
    ¦Facilitate policy and regulatory harmonisation across regions;
    ¦Provide guidance on optimizing the positive impact of Broadband through innovative applications and services; and
    ¦Act as a platform for the sharing of knowledge about collaboration, harmonization, infrastructure sharing, spectrum management, competition and pricing, as well as increasing the uptake of mobile broadband.
