~~Adz:Left~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - JERMAINE Wilkinson and Jermaine Underwood were this afternoon (Monday) found “guilty” of “assault with intent to rob” but were remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison until tomorrow (Tuesday) when sentence is scheduled to be passed.

The two men’s trial began earlier today after a 12-member jury comprising of six men and six women were selected as judges of fact in the case.

The two were accused of assaulting Glenroy Marshall in Church Street, Basseterre on the night of Saturday, May 12, 2007.

Marshall was the first prosecution witness to take the stand and explained that he was on the said street when he was approached by the number one accused, Jermaine Wilkinson.

“Number one accused approached me and asked to use my cell phone…I said I don’t have a cell phone.  He then asked me how come I don’t have a cell phone. He pulled me by my tie and tried to pull me around by an alley which was by Masses House and Chef’s Place.”

Marshall explained that during the ordeal, he saw the number two accused, Jermaine Underwood, who was saying, “Bring him through, bring him through!”

“While we were there wrestling, he was saying, ‘gimme all you got in you pocket’. During that time he was trying to get me through the alley,” Marshall said, adding Wilkinson stumbled which allowed him to break free and make a run to safety.

The virtual complainant said he sought refuge by running up the stairs of the “Chef’s building”, where he made contact with the police. He further explained that he went back down the stairs to await the arrival of the police, but had to retreat when he saw both accused “coming back at me” from the Cable parking lot.

“I ran back up the steps and phoned the police again.”

Sometime following the ordeal, both Wilkinson and Underwood were picked up by the police, formally arrested and charged.

Other prosecution witnesses in the case included Sgt. James Sutton, Constable Julius Wyatt and Cheryl Christopher.

Wilkinson, when presented the opportunity, opted to take the stand and in his defence stated that he was on Fort Street in the vicinity of Skerritt’s Drug Store at the time of the incident.

It took the jury little more than an hour to return a guilty verdict in which they were unanimous in their findings concerning both men.
