BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (23 rd October 2011) - All swimming events (open water swimming and the swimming component of triathlon) not associated with the pool as well as the Beach Volleyball of the Pan American Games/Guadalajara 2011 actually take place in a sub-site in the city of Puerto Vallarta. That is where Glen Quinlan, Treasurer of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association has been based over the last 7-10 days.
Mr. Quinlan has been functioning in his role as a Member of the Executive of the NORCECA—which is the acronym for the authoritative, decision-making body for Volleyball in the Continental Region of North and Central America and the Caribbean. This is the organization that has been responsible for all the technical execution and coordination of the Beach Volleyball competitions (male and female) for the PAN AMERICAN GAMES 2011. Mr. Glen Quinlan has performed the role as the chief technical delegate responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Beach Volleyball Venue and Competition.
Today, Saturday 22nd October, there was an extremely high powered presence at the Beach Volleyball Venue. Present were the Pan American Sports Association President, Don Mario Vazquez Rana, his Executive Secretary/Jimena Saldana, the Governor of Jalisco (includes Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta), Senior PASO Executive Member and President of the International Swimming Federation/Mr. Julio Maglioni, Mr. Alphonso Bridgewater/PASO Executive Member and Director-General of the 2011 PAN AMERICAN GAMES/Mr. Carlos Andrade. It was the date of the concluding games of the Beach Volleyball Competition which featured the matches for third and fourth place between Argentina and host country, Mexico; and the gold medal match-up between Brazil and Venezuela. Argentina defeated Mexico in three-setter to gain the bronze medal whilst Brazil defeated Venezuela in two sets to win the gold medal.
To crown off the prominent presence of St. Kitts and Nevis nationals at these high profile matches, SKNOC President Bridgewater, in his capacity as Executive Member of the PAN AMERICAN SPORTS ORGANIZATION (PASO) was selected to make the 20 minute plane ride from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta to present the medals to the winning teams.
President Bridgewater explained that “every where he turned in the venue, he was inundated with praise of and credit for the leadership and efficiency of Mr. Glen Quinlan.” “Even at the indoor Volleyball venue when I encountered senior Volleyball administrators like the Pan American Continental Federation President Marti of Santo Domingo and the South American Volleyball Federation President from Brazil,” Bridgewater continued, “they could not stop singing the praises of Glen Quinlan”.
In conversation with President Bridgewater, just before the Medal Presentation Ceremony, Mr. Quinlan indicated that he was relieved to see the successful completion of Beach Volleyball and was looking forward to travel back home to St. Kitts and Nevis.
Off the field St. Kitts and Nevis continues to make its presence felt at the 2011 PAN AMERICAN GAMES and await the start of the Track and Field competition to see if the SKN Team can repeat the success achieved at the August 2011 IAAF World Championship.
