25 percent reduction in crime in September

COP Celvin Walwyn

BASSETERRE St. Kitts – COMMISSIONER of POLICE, Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn, has reported that during the month of September, 2011, a 25 percent reduction in crime across the Federation was recorded.

The disclosure was made last week Friday (Oct. 21) by Commissioner of Police Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn, during a ceremony to hand over two vehicles to the newly-formed Delta Squad.

“I would also like to let the public know that in the month of September…crime within the Federation was reduced 25 percent overall. In St. Kitts…crime was reduced 48 percent. So the teams are having an effect. The way we are doing policing now is having an effect. The men and women of the agency are dedicated; they have been revitalized and they are out here working.”

Since taking command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), Walwyn displayed a no-nonsense approach to the operations of the organisation and to the fight against crime. He instituted a number of programmes including the formation of the Delta Squad – which is a task force comprised of members of both the RSCNPF and the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force).

The COP explained that several successes have been realised including the removal of drugs and guns from the Federation’s streets since certain programmes were introduced.

He, however, explained that, “We do have some challenges but as we go along, those too will be eliminated.”

Prime Minister and Minister with responsibility for the RSCNPF and the SKNDF, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas also spoke at the ceremony and indicated that Walwyn and his officers’ vigorous fight against crime coupled with the support of the SKNDF is what would yield results.

Dr. Douglas expressed that the success of the Federation’s crime fight would redound to the benefit of the Federation and its citizens.

“At the end of the day, it is the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis who will benefit because as our country settles down from this wave of criminal activity, we would be able to engender yet again a spirit of goodwill among our people, the environment and atmosphere will eventually change and we would be able to continue to attract not only foreign direct investment but stimulate yet again local investment in the continued development of our country.

“At the end of the day as I said it’s the people of St. Kitts and Nevis who must benefit from the collaboration, the cooperation and partnership of various groups as we commit ourselves once again in the fight against crime.”
