Basseterre, St. Kitts (December 13, 2004): One young male and female will soon have the honour of representing St. Kitts and Nevis at one of the most prestigious and influential political organizations in the region.

Geoffrey Hanley, Director of Youth in the Ministry of Education, Youth, Social Development and Gender Affairs told SKNIS that his department is presently accepting applications from persons to serve in the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Programme (CYAP).

The CYAP is the Caribbean Communitys institutional arrangement for deepening levels of youth partnership and participation in integration and development processes.

It aims to develop a cadre of young leaders equipped with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to educate the youth about regional issues and advocate for the rights of young people. Integration of youth perspectives and promoting Caribbean identity and citizenship among young people are also outlined as objectives.

Mr. Hanley indicated that the major duties of CYAs are advocacy, outreach and peer-to-peer education. CYAs also participate in meetings of CARICOM organs, institutions and partner agencies.

The Department of Youth is inviting applications from all interested youths, which is nationally defined as a person between the ages of 18 to 30 years. The youth director stressed that the selection process will be fair, as the aim is to have the best representation for St. Kitts and Nevis.

The deadline for applications is December 17.  Additional information is available at the Department of Youth at Church Street.
