Press Release

ST.GEORGE’S Grenada, October 24th 2011 - Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas boarded a LIAT flight at the Maurice Bishop International Airport this morning at the start of a three day journey that will take him to France and to Australia.

The Prime Minister will address the 36th UNESCO General Conference in Paris on October 25th. The meeting will determine UNESCO’s work and policies and fix its programme and budget for 2012-2013, including the specific challenges facing its largest programme, education.

The Organisation is seeking a more coordinated approach in working towards the 2015 deadline and beyond for its Education for All (EFA) project. This includes the development of a new architecture for the global EFA coordination mechanism to allow for UNESCO to take the lead in coordinating efforts among the numerous stakeholders in the EFA movement.

The Prime Minister is also expected to address the organisation’s ability to “balance its holistic vision of education while focusing on particular thematic areas” - especially in times of financial constraint.

UNESCO aims to strike ”the right balance” in maintaining a holistic vision while keeping a programmatic and geographical focus on countries furthest from achieving EFA.

The Prime Minister will leave Paris on the 26th for Perth, Australia, to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which is being held under the theme; 'Building National Resilience, Building Global Resilience'.

The meeting will discuss, among other issues, the impact of global warming on small states of the commonwealth, international peace and security, democracy and youth affairs.

Prime Minister Thomas said the transfer of technology from the more developed to less developed members of the Commonwealth, will also be on the agenda, especially in relation to climate change and alternative energy sources.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Karl Hood.

Minister for Finance Nazim Burke has been appointed acting Prime Minister.
