    Palmetto Point resident to compensate Shaw Avenue victim

    ~~Adz:Right~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE doors of the nation’s courts swung wide open last week and workers there seemed quite busy as a number of persons charged with various offences were tried and convicted.
     
    A Palmetto Point resident was found guilty of “battery” and was ordered to compensate the aggrieved party.
     
    Icilma Issac of Palmetto Point was convicted of a “battery” offence and was ordered by the Magistrate to pay $1 000 as compensation to Angelique Caines of Shaw Avenue, Basseterre.
     
    The offence was committed on November 24, 2007 when Caines reported to the police that she was beaten by Isaac. After carrying out investigations, the police eventually arrested and charged Isaac.
     
    Molyneaux resident Vere Amory appeared before the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday last on two counts of “malicious damage”. He was convicted and ordered by the Magistrate to pay a total of $4 700, of which $500 is to be paid to the court in one month or he would have to serve a three-month term imprisonment. The remaining $4 200 is to be divided amongst the two virtual complainants.
     
    As compensation to Lee Olson of Zetlands for damages done to two doors he owns, Amory was ordered to pay $1 200. Another Zetlands resident, Gerald Staines, is to receive $3 000 from Amory as compensation for damaging a window and a door belonging to Staines.
     
    Cotton Ground resident Mervin Parris, having answered to a charge of “possession of cannabis” in the said court, was convicted and fined $2 000 to be paid within two months. If he fails to do so, a six-month custodial sentence would be imposed. 
     
    As stated by police, the charge was laid after “police on Nevis executed a search warrant on the premises of Parris for control drugs, arms and ammunition and a quantity of marijuana was found in his pocket”.
     
    David Blake of Hermitage Road, Nevis appeared before the District ‘C’ Magistrate’s Court and was convicted for “driving without due care and attention” and “driving a motor vehicle without having a valid driver’s license”. He was fined $500 to be paid in three months or, alternatively, serve three months in prison on the first charge. He was however cautioned on the second charge.
     
    Craddock Road resident Kingsley Tyson, who was charged with “making use of insulting language” against Port Security Officer Erslyn Jones, was convicted and fined $500 to be paid within two months or six months imprisonment. The offence was committed on February 28, 2008.
     
    For the offences of “driving a vehicle at night without a rear light” and “driving a motor vehicle at night with no light to illuminate the rear number place”, Jefferson Wilkinson of Bath Village was convicted and charged. He was fined $200 on the first count, which is to be paid within one month, and a 14-day custodial sentence would be imposed if he fails to comply. 

    He was also fined $200 on the second. A one-month period was given for payment of the fine imposed, and should he fail to do so, he would have serve 14 days in prison.
