Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Launches 2012 OECS Essay Competition

    BASETERRE St. Kitts, October 26th 2011 - Students participating in the 2012 OECS Essay Competition, which is hosted by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, will write on one of two topics:

     

    1. What viable steps should OECS countries take to stimulate their economies and significantly reduce their national debts?
    2. The role of young people in shaping the future of the OECS countries.


    The OECS Essay Competition which the ECCB has been hosting for the past 16 years is designed to encourage critical thinking among the region's students and to motivate their engagement in discussions on issues of national and economic development.

     

    The competition nis open to students aged 14 - 19 througout the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). The entries are judged in two categories: ages 14  to 16 and ages 17 to 19. The essays must be 750 to 1000 words, and must be type written. They will be assessed for content, soundness of points, logical development, knowledge of the subject, command of language and presentation.

     

    Cash prizes amounting to $10,000 will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each category while grants amounting to $6,000 will also be awarded to their respective schools. The school submitting the most entries will also receive a cash award.

     

    The essays for the 2012 OECS Essay COmpetition must be submitted to the ECCB Headquarters or the Bank's Agency Office int he respective member countries, no later than 30 March 2012.
