BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - Peace Through Flowers. This is the theme of the World Flower Council, now in its 29 th year of existence.

Founded in Gifu, Japan by the late Mr. Juzaburo Sekiye of Tokyo, this organization is ” dedicated to the furthering the cause of world peace through the beauty of flowers and the sharing of knowledge among those who have the chosen the floral industry as their profession.”

Members include flower growers, flower exporters, wholesalers and retailers, international designers and judges, as well as persons involved in the educational aspects of the profession. The Annual Summit is open to relatives and friends as well other interested persons.

Well over 20 countries were represented at the 28th Annual Summit of the Council which took place at the Sheraton Skyline Hotel at Heathrow, London, England from 22nd to 26th September.

St. Kitts –Nevis was represented by five persons of the local Flower Arrangers’ Association. They were Agnes Farrell, Ellenitta Nathaniel, Puretta Wilkin, Dulcie Richardson and President Gary Thompson.

Led by the President they did our Federation proud as they participated in the session ‘My Country Designs, Mini Demonstration’. This floral design featured Caribelle Batik.

The audience listened wide-eyed as a brief description was given of the individual nature of each finished piece of fabric, while the arrangement attempted to create the garden effect of Romney Manor.

Fabric roses were formed from scraps of the batik and incorporated into the design. Three members of the St. Kitts-Nevis team wore appropriate Items of clothing.

The team was highly praised for the presentation and persons were eager to handle samples of the fabric which were passed around.

We wish to express our thanks again to the management of Caribelle. Batik for the loan of items and a number of brochures tor distribution during the demonstration

Workshops are among the high points of these Summits. Facilitators this year were Wendy Andrade NDSF AIFD, Sarah Horne AIFD CFD and David Ragg.
