CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - A Canadian national was this morning rescued by a Nevisian after the cottage he had rented went up in flames.

Murray Archer, a Canadian who frequently visits Nevis, was admitted to the Alexandra Hospital after sustaining serious injuries when his rented cottage in Fort Ashby, Cades Bay was destroyed by fire today.

Former Cotton Ground resident Steve Browne, who now lives in a cottage next to Archer’s, braved the inferno and rescued his neighbour. According to reports, Browne was in his kitchen sometime after 7.00 a.m. when he saw the smoke and thought it was coming from the stable.

A short while after, Browne said he heard a loud blast and decided to investigate.

“I ran outside and I heard shouts of help, help! When I went into the cottage he was lying on the floor and I quickly picked him up and placed him under the mango trees. Fortunately,

after the people at the horse’s stable saw the fire, they called the ambulance and the Fire Department.”

Browne said the Canadian had sustained serious injuries to the sole of one of his feet and his elbows.

He also said some of the hair on Archer’s head was burnt. Browne further said the victim told him the fire was caused by a fan in the building.

Spencer Howell, who has leased the property at Fort Ashby, said Archer has been visiting Nevis for the past 10 years.

He arrived on Nevis three weeks ago, and Browne informed that the man’s sister had recently visited him at the cottage.
