~~Adz:Left~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A cross section of students from the Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School took timeout from their academic schedules earlier this morning to distribute some 25 food baskets to elderly persons who reside in the same community with their school.

At about 9:30 a.m., the children, accompanied by their teachers Avril Noel of the Kindergarten class, Empress Stanley of the Grade Six class, A. Richards of the Grade Two and Aiesha Henry of the Grade Five class, left the schoolyard bearing baskets that contained the food items and trod down into the community to distribute the goodies. Areas visited included Nevis Street, Market Street, College Street and Dorset Village.

SKNVibes was among two media houses present and witnessed a number of deliveries. The baskets contained items that the school acquired by asking each student to secure an item from their pantry, but not without their parents’ permission.

The students, while handing over the baskets, explained to the elderly persons who they were, the school they represented and the reason for delivering the goodies; and in acceptance, the recipients expressed their gratitude while some were wide-eyed in an expression of surprise.

While SKNVibes was unable to obtain all the names of individuals to whom baskets were given, the media house established that Maude Tyrrell, Sylvia Herbert, Viola Gumbs, Mrs. Cabey, Mrs. Hanley and persons identified simply as, ‘Mavie’, ‘Elizabeth’, ‘Julie’, ‘Vergie’ and ‘Nellie’ were among the lot.

The exercise ended around 110:30 a.m. and the students along with their teachers returned to the school compound and resumed their daily regimen.

Noel, in an interview with SKNVibes, explained that the basket distribution initiative was the brainchild of principal of the school, Iscilma Springer, as a means of “showing the elderly that there is a school and a community that is in need of and care for them. We just want to show them that we are a caring school”.

Noel said a similar exercise was carried out by the students during a past Christmas season but was now re-introduced for the aforesaid reason.

According to Noel, the exercise is expected to be repeated during the upcoming Christmas season and every year thereafter.
