BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH excitement written on their faces and their tiny bodies bedecked in an array of creative costumes, students of the Victoria Road Pre-School eagerly participated in the institution’s ‘Who Am I’ day on Friday, October 28.
Instituted in 2009, the activity was designed to inject some measure of excitement into the children’s regular routine while providing an outlet for them to visibly express the characters and individuals they have taken a liking to.
According to Canecia Warner, teacher at the pre-school, rather than wearing the usual Friday garb (T-shirt and jeans) each child was required to wear some sort of fun and creative costume, which would stimulate discussions amongst them.
She explained that as each child entered the compound, the others who would have arrived earlier were delighted to make guesses about what costumes their fellow students were wearing.
Police officers, ballerinas, a bumble bee, nurses, princesses, fairies, preachers, teachers, doctors, a footballer, a cheerleader, a basketball player, and popular cartoon characters Scooby Doo and Buzz Lightyear were some of the costumes sported by the eager pre-schoolers.
Commenting on the success of the day, Warner told SKNVibes that the activity was very successful.
“The children came out in their colourful costumes. Also, the parents really went out of their way to prepare their children for the day. Some costumes were really creative…In some cases, it seems like the parents were more excited about the activity than their children.
“There was this one boy who came as the Prime Minister. So they really came out and the children were really excited about the activity.”
She further explained that there were initial plans of having a modelling/entertainment section where each child would have had an opportunity to hit centre stage and display his or her costume.
That plan did not materialise; however, as “the day was a hectic one…it was a successful day”.
‘Who Am I’, SKNVibes understands, is the brainchild of Andrea Liddie, a former Supervisor of the Victoria Road Pre-School.
