BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 2nd 2011 - On Thursday, October 20, students from the grade 5 class of the Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS) reached out to an alumna of the former St. Joseph's Catholic School, Ruby Thomas, of Pitcarin Street in New Town who turned 91 on the day of our visit.
Accompanied by the Principal of ICCS: Mr. Sidney Osborne, Religious Education teachers: Fr. Bernard Latus and Sr. Pearline Mussenden, the students of grade 5 brought her a food basket, sang songs and said prayers while Ruby shared with them stories of the old times in the "Roman" school. She was a student of that school in late 1920s and early 1930's. She said that the sisters who came were first called "Madams" and then "Mothers" imposed stern discipline and held good academic standards which paid off later in life when she worked in England. She mentioned the service that they had to do as students for the school and on behalf of the school for the church and community.
She was very grateful for their visit and encouraged them to be good students and well behaved to be worthy of that school. The pupils of ICCS listened attentively to her stories.
The Principal Mr. Osborne said that the ICCS will adopt her as the old school alumni in the neighbourhood and on the monthly basis bringing her a food basket on the last Friday of the month.
After she retired and came back from England to settle back in St. Kitts Ruby Thomas served as the sacristan in the Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral and until very recently provided, from her small pension, food for the clergy and for the poor - in the spirit of service she learned from the Madams and Mothers of the old "Roman" School.
