CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - IT was all smiles for long-serving and dedicated employees of the Environmental Health Department and the Solid Waste Management Authority when they received cash awards last evening at a ceremony held in their honor by the Ministry of Health at the Red Cross Building, Chapel Street.

The ceremony was held to mark World Health Day under the theme “Protecting Health from Climate Change”.

Among the recipients of the awards from the Environmental Health Department are Alfred Clarke (1954), Reginald Abbot (1985), Edmund Dasent (1942), Orville Smithen who has served for 18 years, George Herbert with 17 years service, Joseph Victor Byron who served for 16 years and Charles ‘Smally’ Arthurton Sweeney.

Awardees from the Solid Waste Management Authority included Herbert George, Gerard Pemberton and Marva Frith.

In his address to the awardees, Minister of Health and Deputy Premier Hensley Daniel said the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) would continually raise the profile of employees in the two sectors by reviewing their pay packages.  “They should retire at the age of 50 or 60 and live on a pension,” he said.  He also commended them for their dedicated service.  ~~Adz:Right~~

The Minister also called on members of the public to change their behaviour towards garbage disposal. “Our part is to ensure that our health is safeguarded; it cannot be left to chance,” the Minister said.

Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Joseph Wiltshire, who represented Premier Joseph Parry, applauded the Ministry of Health for recognising the employees. He said dedicated and committed service goes unnoticed in certain cases.

Others who witnessed the World Health Day Service Awards Ceremony included Cabinet Secretary Ashley Farrell, Junior Minister with responsibility for Trade Dwight Cozier, Adviser Ministry of Tourism Alastar Yearwood, Education Adviser Christine Springette, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Joslyn Liburd and Health Adviser Patricia Hanley.

Shirley Wilkes paid a glowing tribute to her late father Norman Dore for his unequalled service as a vector control officer.
