BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN early Saturday morning fire severely damaged the interior of a vehicle owned by IAS Auto Rental and arson is suspected to be the motive.

According to Fire Inspector Everett O’Garro, shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 the St. Kitts Fire and Rescue Services received a call that a motorcar was on fire in the Shadwell area.

He noted that on arrival at the scene, firemen met a number of police officers and they were directed to a white Mazda rental [R65] parked outside of the Skerritts’ residence in Shadwell with the interior gutted in flames.

Upon further investigation, O’Garro said it seemed that someone smashed the left rear window of the vehicle and used an incendiary device to set flames to its interior.

The vehicle is the property of Sylvester ‘Seymour’ Williams, owner of Island Auto Supplies and IAS Auto Rental. At the time of the incident, the vehicle was rented to Denise Barbara Taylor, a vacationer from the United Kingdom, who had originally rented the vehicle for a period of one month beginning January 5 and had continued to renew the contract up to the point that the seemingly senseless malicious act was committed.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Williams said it was the first time any of his vehicles was damaged or targeted in that manner.
