Octogenarian dies in Bay Road traffic accident

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis recorded its first road fatality earlier tonight (Nov. 11) when an 83-year-old man was struck by a motorcar on the Bay Road in Newtown.

Dead is Joseph 'Finey' Allen of Lower Pitcairn Street, Newtown.

According to Head of the Traffic Department, Inspector Cromwell Henry, the accident occurred between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. on the Bay Road about 25 metres from the street where Allen resided in the vicinity of St. Kitts Scooter Rental.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Allen, a pedestrian, was crossing the Bay Road to get towards the seaward side of the road when he collided with motor vehicle P2341.

“The vehicle, driven by Elvis Richardson of Haynes-Smith Village, was at the time travelling towards Basseterre from Bird Rock,” Henry said.

He noted that District Medical Officer Dr. Mervyn Laws was summoned to the scene and had pronounced Allen dead.

“An autopsy will be performed later to ascertain the cause of death, but investigations are ongoing at this time,” Henry added.

According to residents in the area, Allen would routinely, around that time, leave his home to relax for hours on the wall facing the Caribbean Sea.
