ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 11th, 2011  – The Office of Gender Affairs will be hosting a series of events to observe November 25 as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The Office’s 16 days of activism, which begin on November 25 and end December 10, will focus on raising awareness on issues surrounding gender-based violence. With the passing of the Domestic Violence Act 2011 on September 7, 2011, the day signifies an extra push for the cause.

Activities, which include a concert and a candle light vigil walk, will provide support to those who are victims of violence and help encourage the public to take a stand.

The Coordinator of Gender Affairs, Ms. Lorolie Connor said, “The subject of domestic violence continues to be an issue of serious concern in our community. Domestic violence destroys families and the community on a whole.”

On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25 as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, in commemoration to the 1960 murders of the Mirabal sisters, who were killed under the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.

The Office of Gender Affairs is responsible for mainstreaming gender through the implementation of policies and programmes that will promote gender equality and equity in the Virgin Islands.
