Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 14th, 2011 – In observance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, the National GIS (NGIS) committee of the BVI Government will be having a map display at the East Atrium in the Central Administration Building on Wednesday, November 16, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Maps will be on display from various government departments such as the Survey Department, Conservation and Fisheries Department, Department of Disaster Management and the Town & Country Planning Department depicting various uses of GIS.

Officers from the BVI National Technical Steering Committee will be there to give demonstrations on other uses of GIS technology. GIS Day, a global event held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (November 13-19, 2011), makes people aware of GIS technology and the important contributions it makes in the fields of science, technology, information, and the humanities.

A GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database such as location, streets, parcel number, buildings, terrain, and other physical elements and depicts them as visual layers.

This technology allows users to locate geographic features on a map and better understand a particular location. It also enables planners and analysts to make more informed decision about their communities.

It is a grassroots event and a reflection of the enthusiasm and the commitment of individual GIS users everywhere.
