SCASPA Staff benefit from Performance Management Workshop

Mr. Curtis Martin, Seminar Leader with some of the participants
Thirty-four (34) participants from the St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority benefited from a Performance Management Workshop that was held from 25th -28th March 2008.  The seminar which targeted managers and supervisors was held at the Frigate Bay Resort.

The Seminar Leader, Mr. Curtis Martin, Vice President of Human Resource at Cable & Wireless, used his personal and professional experiences to relay the theme for the sessions, “Managing for High Performance.”

One key point reinforced was the need to practice effective listening.  It was pointed out that we do not listen properly, and poor listening skills, create a communication problem as information can sometimes be misconstrued.

According to one participant, “While it reinforced some of the principles that we live by, it was a learning experience for me.  I am now more conscious of my behavior and pay particular attention to my mannerisms. The seminar has helped me to realize that sometimes, in fact, most of the times, we do not give people the respect that we should give to them and very simple habits can be disrespectful.”  The participant went on to say that the seminar forced him to look inside himself to recognize and acknowledge his shortcomings, something that he has never really done and has promised himself to do more often.  ~~Adz:Right~~

At the end of the seminar most of the participants were impressed by Mr. Martin’s interactive style of delivery.  They also agreed that though it was educational and informative, they were still able to have fun and enjoy a light moment.

SCASPA will continue to invest in the development of human resources.  The Performance Management Workshop is only the first in a series of training opportunities aimed at building the capacity of management and staff to perform their roles more effectively.
