Miss Terra Forma 25-year-old Johan Kelly, hailing from the parish of St. Peters convincingly won the coveted title of National Carnival Queen last evening, December 28, 2004 from a field of four other contestants.

Kelly, who was also crowd favorite from the time she entered the stage, won six of
Miss St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Karissa Browne winner of the Swimwear segment. Her swimwear was designed by Calvin Southwell of Antigua
the judged segments including, Best Talent, Best National Costume, Best Evening Wear Design, Best Evening Wear, Best Interview and Miss Photogenic.

Moments after she was crowned Kelly uttered a few words to SKNVibes.com saying that, "I'm really excited, I really worked hard and my costume was incredibly heavy, but I did it!"

Indeed she did, as she superbly performed her National Costume with ease, dancing and swaying to the latest Carnival tunes in a costume entitled Queen of the band.

First runner-up position went to former Miss Teen Universe and winner of several other competitions since she was about nine, Miss Beaumont Park, Jermul Huggins, also hailing from the St. Peters area, and second runner-up went to another winner of several pageants in the past Miss Smirnoff Ice, Samantha Canwood.

Canwood also won the Miss Congeniality award.

Best Swimwear went to Miss St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Karissa Browne. Her swimwear was designed by Calvin Southwell of Calvin S Designs in Antigua.

The other contestant was Miss Ginseng Up, Jenelle Adams hailing from Ponds Extension, Basseterre.

The show came off to good start with the fanfare opening performed with some of the members of the CFBC Dance Ensemble, following a performance by the youngest group of the Children's Dance Theatre, Sparks performing "Get Loud".

The talents segment range from singing to dramatizing, on topics such as
Second runner-up Miss Smirnoff Ice Samantha Canwood in National Costume.
HIV/AIDS, young people and thanking family and friends for support.

"Boom, boom", went the big drum as Kelly, who won the talent segment, depicted a drama, playing tribute to the Kittitian big drum in "Rhythm and verse-How I learnt to play".

Kelly colourfully painted a picture of emotions, excitement and awe of the wonderful "Kittitian big drum".

Her evening wear which won two categories, was beautifully designed by Trinidad's famous designer Peter Elias.

When asked during the interview segment, if she was the advisor for the Minister of Tourism, what advice she would give to him about the improving the Tourism Industry in St. Kitts, Kelly, stressed on the importance of Customer service and training... "This would encourage more tourists to our country when they hear of our excellent customer service," she said.

Interestingly enough, five points were deducted from some of the contestants who went over the allotted time for the Talent segment, they were Jermul Huggins and Samantha Canwood.

Some contestants also received five extra points for early arrival, they included Jermul Huggins, Johan Kelly and Jenelle Adams.

The show also featured a new change when the contestants performed their talents before their National Costume.

However, when it was time for the National Costume, there was somewhat a delay, which caused people to wonder what was going on. The delay wasnt obvious as sideshow performances were executed during that time.

Apparently, some of the costumes were still being mended.

The packed side show included performances by Modern Image band featuring Lynshel Peats, Dahkru, Underground, Z-Dan of Da Embassy, past Calypso King Starshield, the first and only queen of soul from the 80's Pat Ross, Latin Lovers and a Rasta Contortionist a.k.a. Rasta Yoga.

    Johan Kelly in National Costume.
Johan won two awards for her Evening Wear including Best Design, and Best Evening Wear.
The hosts for the evening were Jason Davis of ZIZ Broadcasting and Shelagh James, the twosome did a great job of keeping the crowd entertained, however, why were they calling Miss St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Karissa Browne, Miss St. Kitts Music Festival?

'Boom, boom" went the drum. Johan Kelly performing her talent.
They did it twice, once, when announcing her for the interview segment and when they announced her as winner of the Swimwear segment.

Was her sponsor changed at the very last minute of the show? If so, then someone should at least let us Journalists know!
