ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 18th, 2011  – Deputy Chairman of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Ms. Fiona Forbes, Director of Human Resources within the TRC Mrs. Karia Christopher and Joshua Wheatley, winner of the World Telecoms Day essay competition recently returned from a Telecoms World Conference in Geneva, Switzerland where the latest electronic gadgets and technology were showcased.

The International Telecommunications Union Conference which is credited for being one of the biggest conferences in the world with its participants spanning the globe was held from October 24 to 27.

Ms. Forbes told the Department of Information and Public Relations that “It was thrilling to be a part of such a prestigious gathering which included heads of government, representatives from international organisations and CEOs of telecommunication providers.

Listening and interacting with the present and future architects of the telecom world gave me a deeper appreciation of the nature and scope of telecommunications and the critical role it plays in revolutionising the world.”

According to the Director of Human Resources, Mrs. Karia Christopher, “We were very proud that the BVI was represented in the embodiment of Joshua who now as a result of this experience has a greater appreciation and interest in technology.” Joshua was exposed to the latest in technology.

He was able to see, touch and feel every virtual image. He was exposed to all of the latest phones, cars, and anything to do with telecommunications he experienced”, Mrs. Christopher said.

Joshua Wheatley reported that he was most impressed with China’s exhibition where he got to see the latest technology in cars; where the entire dash board was literally a computer and this experience has sparked his interest in career opportunities in the telecommunications industry.

Mrs. Christopher added that she would like to see a telecoms revolution in the Virgin Islands. “We want our young people to have access to the world. We want them to graduate from laptops to I-pads.”

The TRC made its appearance at the conference as part of activities executed by the unit to celebrate Telecommunications and Information Society that was held on May 17th under the theme “Molding Your Future through Technology”.

A Telecoms Expo was held which sought to raise awareness of the benefits that the internet and other and communication technologies bring to society today and highlighted careers in the telecommunications industry. Telecommunication providers LIME and BVI Cable TV were major sponsors of the event.
