CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - DESPITE much anticipation that Shermel Phillip’s murder trial would open during the current High Court Assizes in Nevis, the case has not been listed.

Justice Ianthea Leigertwood-Octave told the court yesterday that she received the much awaited trial’s indictment late last week. Her ladyship enquired from the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Pauline Hendrickson, whether the trial would commence but she said the prosecution was not yet ready.

She was optimistic that the trial would commence in the November Criminal Assizes and explained that if it were to commence now, it would overlap with the St. Kitts Criminal Assizes scheduled for May.

On Tuesday, February 20, 2007, police arrested and charged former Leeward Islands spin bowler Warrington Phillip of Jessups Village with the murder of his wife Shermel Phillip, allegedly committed on Friday, February 16, 2007.

The 27-year-old Assistant Manager of Conference Room and Services at the Four Seasons Resort was found dead in her car in the yard of her Brown Hill home.   ~~Adz:Right~~

Dr. Henry Browne, who is representing Warrington Phillip, said in an interview that the defence was ready. He said the judge had received the indictment late last week. Both the prosecution and the defence lawyer did not object to the case being traversed.

Barbadian Forensic Pathologist Dr. Stephen Jones performed an autopsy on the late Shermel Phillip and ascertained that death was due to haemorrhage and shock caused by stab wounds to the neck.
