ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 22nd, 2011  – The Ministry of Communications and Works has temporarily deactivated the right turn signal at the James Walter Francis Drive and Wickham’s Cay II/Pasea Intersection as a precautionary measure as they re-evaluate the viability of the traffic lights.

Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the ministry has been receiving several complaints from the public regarding the right turn from James Walter Francis Drive to Wickham’s Cay II which is creating a hazard for motorists.
The minister explained that the location of the lights will have to be optimised through road expansion and public education.

“At this point we are not trying to nullify the lights. We are trying to make them safer for pedestrian and vehicular traffic,” Minister Vanterpool said. According to the minister, the ministry is working closely with the Public Works Department to ensure that the lights function optimally.

“We will look into acquiring land to expand the road so that we can create separate turn lanes or we might even have to look into options for relocation,” he added.

On November 3 the traffic lights at James Walter Francis Drive and Wickham’s Cay II/Pasea Intersection were commissioned. The new and the existing ones at Station Avenue are wirelessly interconnected to keep both in sync in order to ensure an efficient and coordinated flow of vehicular traffic.

Additional lights and signage have been strategically placed along the James Walter Francis Drive to provide a safer traffic movement environment. The Ministry of Communications and Works is committed to reviewing the road traffic throughout the Virgin Islands to provide relief to the motoring public and pedestrians.
