ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 23rd, 2011  – The Ministry of Health and Social Development is refuting claims of open burning at the Incinerator Plant in Pockwood Pond after having received a report from concerned members of the public that open burning had resumed.

Upon investigating the report with Incinerator Plant Manager, Mr. Miguel Smith, it was affirmed that no open burning was taking place at the Incinerator Plant. Mr. Smith noted that there was still some decomposing organic waste on the dumpsite which had produced methane, a natural gas and as a result, the garbage caught fire.

The Incinerator Plant Manager added that the incinerator plant has been operating so well that they are no longer required to incinerate garbage on a daily basis.

Minister of Health and Social Development, Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton is aware of the situation and has instructed Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mrs. Carolyn Stoutt-Igwe “to take the appropriate measures to prevent the spontaneous combustion of any garbage, as the health of the people of the Territory is of paramount importance to the Government of the Virgin Islands.”

The Ministry of Health and Social Development endeavours to provide leadership that promotes health, social well being and a safe environment.
