    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 6TH 2004) – Cabinet has received an update from the Sugar Re-Development Committee with respect to the future of the St. Kitts Sugar Industry and is taking up an offer of assistance from the Barbados-based European Union Commission.



    A number of matters were discussed and the Cabinet has directed the Sugar Re-Development Committee to continue to find ways to diversify the industry and make it more cost effective.



    Cabinet was informed of recent discussions that Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Trade, Labour, Social Security, CARICOM Affairs, Telecommunications and Technology, the Hon. Sam Condor had with the Head of Delegation of the European Union Commission, His Excellency Amos Tincani.



    Ambassador Tincani has indicated the willingness of the Barbados-based European Union Commission to bring local, regional and international agencies to discuss the future of the sugar industry.



    The Ministry of Agriculture has been directed to take the lead in organising the meeting by the end of March.
