Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 28th 2011 - While congratulating the St. Kitts Nevis Under-23 footballers for trouncing Trinidad and Tobago’s team 5-2 Sunday night at Warner Park stadium, the St. Kitts Nevis Football Association is also expressing its gratitude to the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis for its financial support.

“We are extremely grateful for the support received from the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis towards the London 2012 Olympic Qualifier CFU finals taking place right here in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Mr Stanley Jacobs, General Secretary of the St. Kitts Nevis Football Association when he received the Bank’s Marketing Manager, Ms Marva Burroughs, at Football House in Basseterre on Monday November 28.

“I keep saying that the St. Kitts Nevis Football Association cannot do this alone, we need the support of the corporate community,” said Mr Jacobs on receiving a sponsorship cheque of EC$5,000 from Ms Burroughs.

“It is very important for us because tournaments like these present opportunities for our young players to advance in terms of scholarships or professional contracts.”

According to the Secretary General, such tournaments also present opportunities for the association to raise the profile of St. Kitts and Nevis in the international community. He said that both the association and the country as a whole were very excited with the win over Trinidad and Tobago.

In handing over the cheque, Ms Marva Burroughs observed that the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis is no stranger to sponsorship of sports and anything creative to do with the Federation’s young people and their expression.

“Development Bank is not just involved in business and entrepreneurship of our youth, but we want to see the full development of our young people, of our culture, and of our nation,” said the Bank’s Marketing Manager. “The Development Bank takes the opportunity to jump in and forge the way where it relates to the entire development of the human being of our young people, hence of our nation.”

She congratulated the St. Kitts Nevis Football Association for the superlative showing by the nation’s under-23 team that beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-2, and thanked the association for involving the Development Bank and giving it the opportunity to participate on that level and wished the team well in their future endeavours.

In the meantime, Mr Jacobs stated that “We believe that we have a very talented team especially the bunch of young players and we are very grateful that we are now in a position, once we win the game tonight (Monday) against Cuba, to advance to the CONCACAF round that will take place in the USA come next year.”

Two of the goals were scored by Javeim Blanchette, a local player who is attending university in the United States and three goals were scored by Romaine Sawyers, a professional player who plays for West Bromwich Albion in the English Premier League. He was born in England of grandparents from St. Kitts and Nevis, and according to Mr Jacobs, “we are extremely happy to have him here.”
