BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- EACH Friday afternoon we go home full of the joys of the weekend. In contrast, after the weekend we may drag ourselves into work full of the Monday morning blues. However, a recap of a joyful weekend just might change that!
It was a Friday afternoon of Mas, splendour, excitement and anticipation as the National Carnival 40:40 Mas Celebration was launched at the Independence Square in Basseterre.
Many filled Independence Square as they witnessed the introduction of creative troupes, prince and princesses, carnival queen contestants and special contributions.
All could anticipate that the shows at Carnival would be enjoyable and would be of high standard.
What made this explosion even more exciting was to see the ‘king’ himself, Elston ‘King Ellie Matt’ Nero perform despite his ongoing health problems.
Other performances were by Dymanyzd and King Starshield.
“Rain, rain go away,” was the cry of many at the Fat Tuesday hangout on Saturday evening as the Clash of the Proud Sounds and Legends Calypso Tent drew a large turnout despite the inclement weather.
Proud Sounds’ own Rock-A-Fella heightened the atmosphere with his song “Stay in you lane!” and soon after, Willy of Legend’s Tent exploded his hit song “Lick-he-bud!”
Many classified this collaboration as the best tent scheduled thus far since it brought out the full force of the great compositions for this year’s 40th Carnival Celebration.
That same Saturday Night, at Sugar Bowl’s bash, Sweet Sista Sensia, Heineken Evolution Sounds, DJ Yardy, Dj Cool and DJ Flex rocked the venue with their unique styles of mixing Dancehall, Reggae and R&B music.
Soon after, women ‘juggled’ to the sounds of Grand Masters band while men stared at them as they assumed their unique ‘soap-dropping’ positions to the sounds of the Small Axe band.
When the show climaxed at approximately 5:45a.m, many said the bash was a ‘money well-spent’ event.
On Sunday evening, the Proud Sound’s Calypso Tent was postponed to December 1st due to the inclement weather.
According to Rod Schmidt, “There are not enough days in the weekend.” Until next weekend…have a productive and safe week.
