Fifty-two awardees recognised this year
BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 30 2011 - The Academic Excellence Recognition and Awards Ceremony conceptualized by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in 1986 is now a quarter of a century old. Organised to recognise outstanding students in school leaving exams, LIME agreed to be the main benefactor when the initial three-year funding expired in 1989.
Twenty-two years later, LIME has continued its unwavering support to what many describe as the local Oscars in St. Kitts & Nevis. “We believe that it is this dedicated support to our young people that helps to inspire them to excellence in academics,” said LIME’s General Manager, David Lake, in an invited comment following the event. “For twenty-two years we have shared in the pride and joy of each parent and guardian who attends this function to celebrate with their children,” he added.
State scholar, Zoe Gonsalves and runner-up Elsie Harry, were among this year’s awardees, copping the two most-coveted prizes of the night. The parents of the state scholar took turns to the podium in the absence of their daughter who has already commenced tertiary education abroad.
LIME’s General Manager, David Lake, presented both trophies to the winners and their representatives, sharing the photo opportunity with Minister of Education, Hon Nigel Carty. To the cheers of their parents, guardians, teachers, Chamber and LIME Officials, fifty-two young adults paraded to the podium during the prize giving segment of the evening.
Earlier in the proceedings, the awardees received much food for thought through passionate presentations from Guest Speaker Damion Hobson of Hobson Enterprises and Minister of Education, Nigel Carty. Both presenters underscored the value of excellence and suggested that it should be part of their everyday life pursuits. Many described the remarks from the sponsors representative, Eunice George, Senior Account Manager at LIME as most touching. She left them with the message: “The rapid change of technology demands that you constantly think outside the box and that you are creative and easily adaptable to change.”
As is customary at the event, a number of Teachers were also honoured for outstanding performance in their own sphere of endeavour. Five teachers from the Teacher Education Division and the Technical Division of the CFB College were recognised with Certificates while eight teachers representing the High schools on both islands were likewise acknowledged.
An added feature of the event this year was a red carpet interview of the top prize winners as well as some parents and the event sponsor.
LIME congratulates all of the recipients of prizes in this year’s Awards Ceremony and commends them for a job well done.
