Press Release

St. George’s, Grenada, November 30th 2011 --  Former Minister for Health, Hon. Clarice Modeste-Curwen, is appealing to the Government to place health on its priority list.

Dr. Modeste said since assuming office the Government has shown blatant disregard for this very important sector on which the sustainable development of our nation depends.

The former Minister has chastised the Government for refusing to make available basic medication at the various health facilities throughout the island.  She commented “The Government continues to demonstrate that it has its priorities upside down. How can you put the focus on building a new hospital when you are unable to manage the one you have, to the extent that you cannot provide on a consistent basis, basic medication and supplies?”  She added, “Very often our Hospitals do not have basic medication and supplies such as pain killers and bandages. Sometimes even food and cleaning supplies are out of stock.”

Modeste says the NDC administration while in opposition said they had all the answers to the problems facing the Health Sector.  However, since assuming office the situation has worsened resulting in possible untimely deaths, poor services and unnecessary pain and suffering for many Grenadians.

The Parliamentary Representative for St. Marks said the Government’s has destroyed the Health facility in Gouyave leaving the residents unable to access certain services in a timely manner.  Over one year since the facility was destroyed, the Government has refused to rebuild the facility even when funding was secured by the NNP administration.

Dr. Modeste is therefore calling on the Government to take health seriously and to put measures in place to address the many problems facing the health sector at this time.
