Mighty Take Over
By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT’S going to be an “Insane Carnival”, according to Soca Monarch competitor Orin Roberts a.k.a. Mighty Takeover.

The former four time junior calypso king who also won the crown three times in a row spoke to SKNVibes about his recent song ‘Insane’ for the Beaumont Park Soca Monarch Power section.

On Friday, (Dec. 2) the semi-finals for both groovy and power segments of the Soca Monarch Competition will be held, then on December 23rd the Finals will take place.

Roberts, who has been singing and competing since the age of nine, said that he is an avid lover of the soca genre and is excited about entering the competition this year.

Last year Roberts was pursuing a Master’s Degree in Banking and Financing from the UWI, Cavehill Campus and decided to stay out of the competition so as to focus on his studies.

Now that he is finished he is re-energized and eager to participate in Carnival and also plans to enter the calypso arena having made the semi-finals on four occasions.

According to Roberts, ‘Insane’ is encouraging everyone to be free and enjoy themselves for at least one day out of the year.

“In St. Kitts we are plagued by economic troubles, so Carnival time is our one time to forget about that and be free and enjoy ourselves.

“You just let go and be free and be crazy, and those who don’t want to be jolly with you  can just move out the way of those who wish to have fun, and deal with the stress for the other 364 days of the year,” he said.

The song was written, arranged and composed by Roberts while the music was done by himself and his brother Kenrod Roberts.  It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Antonio Liburd of Abbo’s Digital Factory in Nevis.

Roberts said that he is excited about the competition and feels that the other artistes have brought out some good music this year.

“I think a lot of persons stepped up a notch this year,” he said. “When I realize they (the Soca Committee)  had joined everyone together last year, I thought people who had good groovy songs might have been at a disadvantage because people tend to prefer a power song generally speaking, but I think separating the categories was a good move on the part of the committee.”

He encourages everyone to come out to the semi-finals and support the artistes as they can only move forward with the support of their own people.
