SPIRIT and SCASPA partners to construct monument in Sandy Point

By: SPIRIT, Press Release

SANDY POINT, St. Kitts and Nevis, December 02nd, 2011 -- A new partnership between the Sandy Point community group SPIRIT and the St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority (SCASPA) has added a sheltered bus stop to the town’s Main Road, as part of the group’s agenda to involve corporate sponsors in community development.

The new feature to the famous Mount Idle street line officially opened this past Wednesday (Nov. 30) and has already begun servicing the people commuting to and from the busy town centre. The bus stop, bearing the insignia of both organizations was financed by SCASPA and constructed by some of Sandy Point’s finest contractors and stonemasons, what SPIRIT PRO Che-Raina Warner commends as a ‘’fruitful cooperation’’.

The bus stop is ideally situated in walking distance from the town’s health services, main schools, shopping areas and sporting facilities. It is also only a stone-throw away from the town’s market and top nightlife venues. The signature stonework, as designed by SPIRIT with the help of Sandy Point’s Mervin Matthew fits in effortlessly with the surrounding architecture and is a welcome addition to the town’s hub.

’We were keen to improve upon the plan proposed by SCASPA as we prioritized the need to ensure the bus stop gels well with the neighboring buildings and also that it is reflective of Sandy Pointers’ involvement through our craft and our renowned workmanship.

’We were very pleased when we were approached by SCASPA to partner on this initiative. We believe one of the best ways to realize community development is to forge healthy relationships with businesses and other government agencies. This is the second phase of our Mount Idle plans for the SPIRIT Year 2011-2012,’’ Warner noted.

Already, the group with its committed members and crowd of community volunteers has demolished derelict buildings on the Main Road in partnership with CIPEO, and has given a face-lift to some of the town’s eyesores. Most recent on its list is the pavilion at the Old Recreation Ground which has fallen into disrepair.

Warner thanked Sandy Pointers and members of neighboring communities for their invaluable hard work in converting the bus stop from a proposal to a reality.

Maintenance of the new bus stop and of the renovated Sandy Point sites is the responsibility of SPIRIT Community Empowerment Division. Sandy Pointers are encouraged to use the facilities to their advantage and urged to take good care of the new facility.
