BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THIS week, the students of the Immaculate Conception Catholic School is bringing out their wacky side with the implementation of their first ever Spirit Week, where they are showing their creativity in weird fashion.

Spirit Week, which is running from November 28 to December 2, is a week of activities and was aimed at showing school spirit and unity within the school as well as a ‘wind down’ from the recently concluded end of term examinations.

Every morning this week the children were seen trodding to school in their wacky outfits with smiles on their faces eager to display their artistic qualitirs to their peers and teachers and to see what others had to exhibit.

Spirit Week commenced on Monday (Nov. 28) with “crazy sock and tie day” where the students wore the craziest socks and/or tie to school, along with their school uniform.

Tuesday (Nov. 29) was dubbed “career day”. On this day the students donned the attire of their future profession.

Wednesday (Nov. 30) was “wacky hat and hair day” where the pupils showed off their creativity by sporting the wackiest hairstyles or hat of their choice.

Today (Dec.1) was “colour house day”. Blue, red, green, and orange were the colours for this day as the children had to wear articles of clothing such as belts, socks, ribbons, or t-shirts representing the colours of their school house.

Tomorrow (Dec. 2) will be “wear what you want/mufti day” as the children will have on their own clothing, while still following the school’s dress code.

Three of the days had a one and three dollar participation fee in an effort to raise funds for donations to a local charity as a means of giving back to the community, and for the school’s Student Council.

Participation is said to have been extremely high with several classes having 100 percent participation daily.

Teachers and other staff members have also been participating as they were seen sporting their wacky outfits and displaying their creativity.

Parents have also been showing their interest as they are said to have been commenting on the fun that Spirit Week has brought into their households, stating that they are having more fun than their children.

The students and teachers competed for wackiest sock, tie and hair.

The winner for wackiest sock was Karla Lewis, the wackiest tie winner was Sheneka Boncamper. Athalia Pencheon, Taryanna Benjamin, and Geofhani Gumbs won most artistic hair, while Sheneka Boncamper,    Sahir Baley won funniest hair, and craziest teacher hair went to Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Street.

Classes are competing for the most spirited class which will be judged based on level of participation in each division. The class with the most spirit will win a pizza party.

The theme for Spirit Week was crafted by the school’s Executive Committee along with members of the Student Council, and is expected to be an annual event.
