Civil servants warned to shape up, be more productive

Government Headquarters in St. Kitts
By: Erasmus Williams, Press Release (CUOPM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 2nd 2011 (CUOPM) – A warning from St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister The Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas for civil servants to become more productive and to cherish their employment opportunities.

“We still have a lot of complaints of absenteeism, lateness and of persons who are not producing to the maximum. We want to give a warning that in situations where we are not getting value for money as public servants, the Government will have to take the appropriate action,” said Prime Minister Douglas at his monthly Press Conference.

“I want to warn public servants to take your jobs seriously. For every job in the public service there are 10 persons out there qualified and waiting to get into those jobs,” said Dr. Douglas who is also Minister of Finance.

Dr. Douglas pointed out that the freeze on new hiring in the civil service continues in an effort to close the fiscal gap and curtail expenditure and at the same time improve upon revenue collection.

“We are retiring those civil servants who have reached the retirement age and who could have been replaced. We did say we will not hire any new persons, expect that we were forced to and even in situations where there are vacancies in the public service, we try to fill those vacancies from within instead of bringing people in,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

“We have not taken a decision to lay off persons. We will not lay off people, instead of that we believe that the challenges are great enough so that those who are employed will remain employed,” Dr. Douglas said.
