    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, December 2nd, 2011 – Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton says he remains passionate about the Territory’s health care sector and the provision of quality, affordable health services.

     

    The Minister made this statement to the Department of Information and Public Relations following his courtesy visit to the BVI Health Services Authority on November 23.

     

    According to Minister Skelton, the government is committed to creating a health care system that works for everyone. He explained that this includes putting in place different mechanisms to bring health care into the 21st century.

     

    The health minister affirmed that no effort would be spared in achieving this goal stating, “We cannot have people in a society without quality and affordable health care. He added, “The Government is assessing the current delivery of health care services as we move forward with a view to making the BVI Health Services Authority more efficient and responsive to the needs of the community.”

     

    Additionally, the health Minister said that Government will work toward making health care more affordable through the development of the National Health Insurance Scheme that will benefit all residents.

     

    During his tour of the Peebles Hospital and the offices of the BVI Health Services Authority, the Minister was provided with a status report on the latest developments, as well as the challenges and needs of the hospital.

     

    The tour was conducted by Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ronald Georges, Director of Hospital Services Mrs. Cedorene Malone-Smith, Chief of Medical Staff Dr. June Samuel and Director of Hospital Nursing Mrs. Jascinth Campbell-Hannibal.

     

    The team visited the laboratory, the dialysis unit, the emergency room, and the paediatrics, obstetrics and surgical wards where Honourable Skelton greeted some of the patients and the staff.

     

    The minister then visited the offices of the technical staff of the Ministry of Health and Social Development; the Solid Waste Department and the Environmental Health Division.

     

    The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to ensuring that an effective health care system is in place through the Ministry of Health and Social Development which promotes health, social well being and a safe environment for all.
