~~Adz:Right~~BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- The sound of sirens ripped through the air on Saturday evening (April 19th) when a unit from the Sandy Point Fire Department responded to a report that a house was on fire somewhere in the Sandy Point area.

Sometime after 8:00 when the unit arrived at Bourkes Project, Cleverly Hill firefighters found a concrete, two-storey dwelling structure on fire with smoke and flames gushing from one portion of the building.

While a crowd gathered at the scene, the unit fought to subdue the fiery ferocity and after dousing the flames, was successful in its attempt.

SKNVibes.com spoke with Ikymo Garvey who indicated that the top floor is occupied by himself, his brother, his sister and her child while the bottom floor is occupied by other family members.  He also explained that he was at his grandmother’s house when a phone call was received indicating that something was awry.

“I was at my grandmother’s house and just as I was going to the shop to buy some stuff, someone called my sister and told her that something is wrong at the house.  They said that it was on fire.  When I got there I realized it was on fire.”

Garvey told this media house that the fire originated in his sister’s bedroom and although confined therein, the bathroom received some fire damaged.  He also informed that luckily there were no human casualties.

“I am thankful that it was not that bad. The TV, dressing table, bed and the other things in the bedroom have been totally destroyed. In the bathroom, the tiles are falling off the walls, the walls are black from soot, the roof is damaged…there is a lot of work which needs to be done,” he bewailed.

According to Garvey, his family had to seek alternative sleeping arrangements that night, because “the smell in the house is too much…the house is now flooded and the cleaning process will begin soon.”

Neither fire officials nor the family offered any clues as to the cause of the blaze.
