BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE National Carnival Committee is mourning the loss of one of its members who reportedly passed away suddenly early this morning at his home (Dec. 4).

Dead is 37-year-old Dwayne Sturge who was a member of the National Carnival Calypso Sub-Committee with responsibility for the Beaumont Park Soca Monarch Competition.

Sturge, the father of one and architect by profession, was the Assistant General-Secretary of the St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association, former coach of Horsford’s Ghetto Roots Basketball team and an ardent football fan whose contributions to the Newtown community will always be remembered.

In a statement issued today, the National Carnival Committee said, “It is with great sadness that the National Carnival Committee together with the Minister responsible for Carnival, Honourable Marcella Liburd, announces the death of its sub-committee member Dwayne Sturge, who passed away suddenly early Sunday morning.

“Dwayne in his capacity as member of the National Carnival Calypso Sub-committee was responsible for the Soca Monarch competition.  In his role as leader of the Beaumont Park Soca Monarch planning team, Dwayne worked tirelessly and was instrumental in its impeccable preparation and organization and in the enthusiasm generated in the competition which resulted in over 40 artistes being registered to compete for the crowns.

“At only 37 years old, Dwayne was full of potential and his untimely loss will be immeasurable not only to his family and abundance of friends but also to National Carnival.

“The members of the National Carnival Committee, stakeholders, artistes and other participants of National Carnival mourn Dwayne's passing and will ensure that his memory is celebrated and that as he would have wished the Soca Monarch Finals will be staged and presented in his honour.”
