BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FIVE vivacious young ladies of the Dr. William Connor Primary School will be competing on Friday (Dec. 9) for the institution’s title of Miss Sports Personality 2011-2012.

The event will be held at the school’s grounds and the competitors are: Miss Golf, Takilah Stanley; Miss Netball, Lilian Baker; Miss Track and Field, Romona Lall; Miss Football, Cassindra Pemberton; and Miss Cricket, Kristan Rawlins.

Head promoter of the event Jessica Jeffers told SKNVibes that the 11-year-olds would make appearances in the Production Number, Promotional Speech segment, Talent segment, Youthful Evening Wear segment and the Interview segment.

She said the pageant has a multi-pronged aim, focusing on engendering “a genuine love for different sports and not just track and field. It is also aimed at teaching the children how to be more sociable with each other and building their self esteem. We are also hoping that as a result of the pageant, the participants’ oral expression skills would be greatly improved”.

When the students make their Promotional Speech appearance, each will be required to deliver a brief history of the sports discipline which they represent and its development into what it is today.

Some members of the public already had an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the contestants when they appeared at Warner Park during the CFU Under-23 Olympic Qualifiers.

They each introduced themselves and the sports discipline they represent and invited the public to enjoy their performance on the night of the pageant.

The pageant was first held in 2004, and after a four-year hiatus it was revived in 2009; and according to Jeffers, the organising committee is always seeking ways to improve upon the affair.

Jeffers indicated that an Inter-Primary Calypso Show will form part of this year’s event, where students from primary schools across the island are expected to participate. Each budding calypsonian would be required to perform one selection on any theme.

The Miss Sports Personality and Inter-Primary Calypso Show winners, as explained by Jeffers, would receive a number of attractive prizes.

Master of Ceremonies will be Calypso Reggie and the Grandmasters has been contracted as the house band. Special appearances are expected to be made by a number of artistes including Dejour, Lady Livity and Honesty.

Last year’s Miss Sports Personality title was won by Toshiorna Millington.
