BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FORMER 4-peat National Carnival Senior Calypso Monarch king, Konris Maynard was ranked number one on the list of calypsonians who are on their way to the 40/40 Sugar Mas Carnival calypso semi-finals.
The eliminations were held over the weekend and ended last night (Dec. 5)in time for the semi-finals scheduled for Dec. 15 at Carnival Village.
Maynard scored a total of 261 points with his song ‘20/20’ while I-Soursop and Queen Anastasia both scored 252 points with ‘Tek Dat’ and ‘Ah Feel it’ respectively.
Ace makes the semi-finals with ‘Man Greatest Enemy’, Socrates with ‘One More Hole’, Singing Jackie with ‘Look in the Mirror’, Big Lice with ‘Aint so kaiso go’ and Rudder with ‘Prosperity’.
The other semi-finalists are Lady Diva with ‘Rock de Boat’, Astro with ‘Wine’, Calypso Craig with ‘Back to Basics’, King Ayatollah with ‘Writing on de wall’, Mighty Takeover with ‘Book and common sense in recession too’, King Dwitie with ‘Faded Glory’, King Godfrey with ‘Who’s in charge’ and Zarkie with ‘I’m charging you’.
The two reserves are Bra Bread with ‘Stickin with Labour and Kinta with ‘It Started in the home’.
Out of the 16 finalists about seven calypsonians will make it through to the finals to compete against last year’s monarch, King Pungwa.
Persons are excited about Maynard returning to the calypso arena as some have said the arena has not been the same without him.
The ‘Unstoppable Force’, who is also the reigning Soca Monarch told the media he took a break from the calypso arena in 2009, and described it as a “short Calypso sabbatical”.
