St. Kitts-Nevis under flash flood warning

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – UNTIL 3:00 p.m. today (Dec. 10), the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis will be under flash flood warning and the public is being admonished to take note and act in accordance.

An advisory issued by the St. Kitts Meteorological Office earlier today indicated that “the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a flash flood warning for low lying and flood prone areas of St. Kitts and Nevis…”

It further explained that “a flash flood warning means that moderate to major flooding is imminent of occurring in low lying and flood prone areas”.

Persons who are in these flood-prone areas are advised to act quickly and move to higher ground.

Additionally, “residents living along streams, creeks, low lying and flood prone areas should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by vehicle. Note, just one foot of flowing water is enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads be extremely cautions and if in doubt, make the smart choice, turn around, don’t drown. Move to higher ground.”

The prevailing rainy conditions have been caused by “a persistent trough over the northeast Caribbean” and it continues to affect “the weather over the Leeward and British Virgin Islands”.

The local Met Office has indicated that it would continue monitoring the weather and has advised the public to diligently monitor the local radio and television stations for additional advisories concerning the flash flood warning.
