‘Sing Stupidness’ gets attention says Mighty Honesty

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – “If a young pig is called a piglet, what a young bull called? Got to be a bullet.”  Those are just a few of the witty lyrics ‘blowing up’ for Sugar Mas 40-40 in the Mighty Honesty’s latest carnival release entitled ‘Sing Stupidness’.

The Calypsonian, whose real name is Learie Hobson, has 26 years of experience under his belt.  He said he got the idea for the song after he did not make the semi-finals last year with a song titled ‘Waiting To Die’ which many people thought was one of the more exceptional ones in the competition.

“So when people ask me what ah coming with this year, I decided to sing stupidness because it seems like that’s what the judges and some people like. As you can hear at the beginning of the song I said, ‘This song is dedicated to those three stooges who judge me last year.’”

He went on to say that every year he sings songs with messages that are completely ignored so I just decided from now on I will sing stupidness.

He said he was watching TV when some of the lyrics came to him but seeing that it was a song for carnival he wanted to give it a carnival feel and also include something for the children, that is why he included some of the nursery rhythms.

“In reality we all know that nobody can fall from a lettuce tree but the idea was to just sing stupidness for all those years of being robbed with sensible songs,” he stated.

The civil servant worker said even though the song is considered to be a stupid one, it is constructive stupidness.

The track is an up-tempo peppy one that was recorded and produced at Ras Kelly’s studio in Challengers.

Hobson said many people have been asking him about competing for the Road March title and he himself has not ruled out the idea but as he said in the song, “I got a lot of fans but me ain’t got any band.”

He stated that because of this song his popularity has risen and he cannot walk the streets in peace because everybody wants a copy of the song. “People no longer refer to me as Honesty they call me ‘Stupiness’.

He sings under the Proud Sounds Tent and recently made the cut through to the finals for the Beaumont Park Soca Monarch competition scheduled for December 23.

Hopson stressed that he would do his best to capture the title and give the fans what they want.

The Newtown resident also has two other songs which he contributed to the Sugar Mas 40-40 celebrations - ‘St. Kitts’, which he dedicates to his daughter Julear Hobson who recently graduated and received 13 distinctions. The other song is titled ‘Is We Killing We’.

Throughout his years of singing he took the first Ghut-O-Rama crown, an East Basseterre Festival crown, and was the only Kim Collins King. He also placed First Runner-up in several other shows and made the National Carnival semi-finals a few times.
