Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, December 9th, 2011 – As the Ministry of Health and Social Development continues to strengthen the delivery of the health care services to effectively address the needs of the Virgin Islands, an invitation is extended to all physicians, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians and other allied health professionals to apply for participation in the “CONJOINT 553: Clinical Management of HIV”.

This distance learning course is offered annually by the National AIDS Programme, in partnership with the University of Washington Treatment, Research and Expert Education (TREE), and the Pan American Health Organisation’s HIV AIDS Project Unit (HAPU) based in St. Lucia.

The distance learning course will commence on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 and ends on Tuesday, March 6. Sessions will be conducted weekly from 12p.m.to 2p.m. at the offices of the National AIDS Programme located on the second floor of the Betteto Frett Building (upstairs Little Switzerland in the yellow building next to Banco Popular).

The Clinical Management of HIV course provides in-depth training in the diagnosis and clinical management of HIV through a web-based curriculum and weekly classroom seminars involving more than 70 case studies on HIV & other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

The web-based coursework focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases using US-based guidelines. The seminars generally feature joint discussions between students from Seattle, Washington and over 20 countries in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

At the end of the 10-week lecture series, among other diagnoses, students will be able to conduct an initial history and physical examination of a newly diagnosed HIV-infected patient; and identify the distinguishing features of each class of anti-retroviral medications, as well as the benefits and challenges of different regimens.

Additionally, participants will be able to identify the most common STI syndromes; describe the unique challenges in diagnosis and management in pediatric HIV, particularly from a global perspective; and discuss the risk factors for mother-to-child HIV transmission, as well as the interventions to prevent transmission in resource-limited settings.

This will be the third cohort of students from the Virgin Islands participating in the Clinical Management of HIV distance learning course. To date 30 persons have graduated from the programme with an enrolment figure of 16 students last year and 14 students in this year’s class.

Each class accommodates 20 students so space is limited. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 23 2011. For more information please telephone the National AIDS Programme at 468 4371 or 468 9785, or email nclarke@gov.vg.

The National AIDS Programme is the arm of the Ministry of Health and Social Development designed to mitigate the health and socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals and the larger community of the Virgin Islands.
