Heavy flowing College Street Ghaut causes traffic congestion

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FAST and dangerously-flowing murky waters with a large quantity of debris along College Street Ghaut are currently causing a traffic build-up in downtown Basseterre.

Visits to the Ghaut from Cayon Street, Bay Road and Liverpool Row revealed that motor vehicles, motor and pedal cyclists are unable to cross the College Street Ghaut from both the eastern and western thoroughfares.

However, while passenger buses and other motor-driven transportation are unable to access the thoroughfare, pedestrians and pedal cyclists are using the bridge on the Bay Road to get to their destinations.

Speaking with SKNVibes, one passenger bus operator, who plys his trade along the western corridor of Basseterre, indicated that he would either use “the roadway that leads to Upper College Street Ghaut or the West Basseterre Bypass Road to safely transport my passengers, because I’m not taking any chances with their lives”.

Police officers were also seen on Cayon Street and the Bay Road directing traffic away from the fast-flowing Ghaut.

Asked why the Ghaut was flowing heavily and rain was not currently falling in Basseterre, a male St. Peters resident said, “This is not the first time the Ghaut is flowing when rain is not falling in town. It happened before and this is all because rain is falling in the mountains. The last time that I saw the Ghaut flowing like this, some foolish people left their vehicles on College Street and one of them was swept into sea and was beyond repair.”

From this backdrop and with safety being the primary reason, SKNVibes takes this opportunity to warn drivers and pedestrians not to attempt crossing the College Street Ghaut but use alternative routes to get to their destination.
